I started a #carstuff slack channel at work but of 130 people, only a few have joined and I wouldn’t say that they are car people. I guess one side effect of working in aerospace is that an #electriccarstuff channel would have a lot more interest but it still bites to not have any true “petrolheads” or “car people” around. Like the kind of people that appreciate the hell out of this disassembly:

I am the highest level of tech support a customer could conceivably talk to(although I almost never talk to customers) for one of the largest Cable providers in the country. I spend most of my day running reports or assisting lower levels of tech support. I typically avoid talking to customers at all costs. Not because I don’t want to(although I really don’t) it’s just that I can do much more work if I don’t have to spend my time on the phone telling them something that the person they are already talking to can tell them.

I love GIS, but I hate engineers who think they understand geospatial science because they’ve learned how to press a few buttons and run some of the tools. I’m dealing with some right now who are trying to do some modeling, but can’t seem to understand that they are using disparate data sources that shouldn’t be combined because they were generated at completely different scales. Think oil & nat gas wells. These things aren’t always drilled straight up and down, or even in a straight line. A lot of times they have to be able to steer where the hole is going while they are already in the ground. My company makes the equipment that makes that possible, as well as stuff that lets the folks top side know which direction they’re going, what the drill string is currently doing, and everything else they could need to know. We also produce just about everything else that’s related to that stuff, it’s been fascinating to learn about honestly.

That’s how I feel much of the time as well. I read an SFChronicle article the other day about “how to save money in the bay area”. One of the tips was “Catch an early movie because some theaters charge less for early showings.”. The rest were equally as derpy life skills but I had a conversation the other day with a software engineer who literally didn’t know how to shave despite being in his mid-30s.
